Actually bigmouth, while I don't want to argue, I do undestand the fear you most have felt. Probably not fear, more like terror. However, we need to channel that feeling into contrusctive, effective, non-abusive forms of discipline. It's possible. Not easy, but possible.
I love cofty's post. And thank you, cofty, for refering to mine.
I literally just threw up (barely) while reading this whole thread over again. Brings back memories. Little "swats". Boy did those leave an impression. Nothing like knowing that the big person in charge has the right to hit you, and that you have to take it. Doesn't matter if it hurts much or not. Just as long as I knew my place. I wonder what being respected by a parent feels like.

Ugh. bigmouth's posts made me sick.
So anyway, if an adult doesn't know how to treat a baby/child, doesn't know to not hit them, doesn't know how horrible it is, then he/she NEEDS to learn. There are so many alternatives to abusing children in order to stop "bad" behavior. Fear is not a good reason to hurt a child. There is NO good reason to hurt a kid, ever.
Why do we continue to allow abuse simply because it seems to stop behavior that we don't like? Because we can't reason with the child? If we can't reason (and we usually can, adults just don't learn how to), we must protect, not by hurting, but by setting physical boundaries for the kid/baby. If we can't, then the child should not be in that situation/area. Can't keep a kid out o the situation? You NEED to hit them? Someone else should be caring for the kid. We don't hit 3 month olds or the extremely mentally challeneged, yet they can get into trouble quickly and easily as well. Why? It's recognized as cruel and ineffective. Same thing for 3yearolds, 13 year olds, whoever. Same thing. Even when it seems effective, the consequences outway the benefits (and the benefits are rarely even real- abuse causes dishonest, fearful "obedience" more than real obedience anyway).
If anyone replies to this just to argue with me, I will not do so.

I was spanked a few times, not very hard, but it hurt, when I was much younger. Also, I was slapped several times and backhanded occasionally. The memories still make me cry. I still am afraid of those in authority. Part of me desires the pain, part of me hates it. In short, I'm f*ckd up.
I could handle the pain- I have great pain tolerance. But being hit, even lightly, by your own parent is a horrible feeling. The shame and humiliation, the basic, natural instinct to get away from the abuser but the knowledge that your abuser will only hurt you more if you do...is terrible. it's cruel. I don't care if you spank your kid a few times or if you beat them every day (although obviously the latter is worse!). It's a horrible thing to essentially tell your child "I'm the boss; obey me or suffer". It's disrespectful to the child and flies in the face of reason and love. Despite what the WT wants you to think, children are people too, and need kindness, gentlenes, patience, understanding, boundaries, discipline, and a consistent feeling of safety with their parents. Not punishments and shame and fear and pain.
F*ck the WT.

jwfacts is so right about the helper part. That means she is inferior.
Chariklo: "Clearly they are totally non-equal. That's why so many JW women compete with each other to look pretty and smart, and at the same time are constantly on the lookout for an immodest woman."
God, I see that so much. It's depressing. Who has the best hair? The prettiest clothes? Who made the cutest comment today at the study?
